Dear Sudanese artists:
There may be some confusion about the art exhibit for the
upcoming Sudan Studies Association conference at Georgetown
University in Washington, D.C. We felt we should clarify.
I was selected by the program chair and President to be
an overall coordinator of the art exhibit. Khalid Kodi has
taken the laudable initiative of organizing a show under
the common theme of "The Mission Kouda." Proceeds
from the show are to be donated in part to charity. Artists
wishing to exhibit are encouraged to participate with Kodi
in his show, but are not required to do so. We will ask
Khalid to confirm with his group so that we will know who
is taking part in "The Mission Kouda" and who
is exhibiting separately. The program coordinator and SSA
will work hard to ensure adequate and appropriate space
for artisits wishing to present, but we cannot guarantee
that there will be space for all. As we said in the first
call for art, we will try to divide the space equally, and
that distribution will be on a first come, first serve basis.
Let me repeat how this is going to work: Artists should
send me a brief proposal with the dimensions of their work
(in feet and inches please). Some of the artists have sent
me pieces of theirs for me to select. However, I am not
curating the show (curating being considered choosing and
arranging); I am simply coordinating the show. The proposals
should say something like this: I am planning to exhibit
two oil paintings that measure 3' X 3'. These must be shown
together as they are part of a theme of _____." Or,
"I am planning to exhibit one wooden sculpture which
stands 5' high and is 12" in circumference. It is free-standing
and can be placed in the middle of the room." The artists
will be responsible for hanging or installing their own
works.
I hope that this clarifies our aims. Those artists who
have been invited by Khalid to take part in his project
should confirm with Khalid and give him dimensions, medium,
etc. <kodi@bc.edu
I look forward to working with all of you.

Renewed Call for proposals for Art Exhibit at Georgetown
University deadline June 1, 2003
The Sudan Studies Association and SSUK renew their call
for proposals from artists for exhibit material at Georgetown
University. I have agreed, as an SSA Board member and Sudanese
art critical studies person, to assist in the coordination
of the art exhibit for the third international meeting.
Individual works of art suitable for display are encouraged
and will be part of a group exhibit space for the duration
of the conference.
Please note that we are providing the space only. Please
think of me as a coordinator and contact person, not as
a curator. We do not have the labor and resources to mount/frame
or hang/install the works. Each artist will hang/install
his/her own works in the space provided. We plan to divide
the space equally among artists, that is, as equitably as
possible, considering the differences in size and art forms
with which we will be dealing. We will be checking out the
dimensions of the room and will need your dimensions and
any other specifications.
Please send proposals for art work to be displayed (and
dimensions) to:
